Make-A-Wish Alabama holding holiday telethon - AL.com

Every child has a wish list around this time of year, but none are more important than the kids waiting to have their dreams fulfilled by Make-A-Wish Alabama.

The elves at Make-A-Wish make miracles for critically ill children every day, but there are always hundreds more wishes than there is ability to fill them.

So Make-A-Wish Alabama is partnering with CBS-42 in the Birmingham area for its first “Wishes Can’t Wait Telethon,” which will give people in central Alabama an opportunity to help whittle down the waiting list and make wishes come true more quickly.

“We are thrilled to partner with CBS 42 and other local leaders to host our first-ever Birmingham telethon,” said Valerie Gerber, Make-A-Wish Alabama Vice President of Advancement. “There are more than 200 children with critical illnesses waiting on a wish, and viewers can help us grant their wishes sooner by texting, calling or giving online on Dec. 12!”

The telethon will go on all day on Thursday, Dec. 12, with live updates on CBS-42 from 5-7 p.m. If you want to go ahead and make a donation, you don’t have to wait for the telethon. Text “Wishes” to 243725 now.

Wishes Can't Wait Telethon

Make-A-Wish Alabama is partnering with CBS-42 to hold a telethon on Thursday, Dec. 12.

The telethon will share the inspiring stories of five Birmingham-area families who have received a wish or are waiting on a wish to be granted, said Tracy Bennett Smith, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish Alabama.

Two of these families have two children who are eligible for a wish, the Farrs and the Tysons.

The Farrs have two daughters with cardiac conditions that are being treated at Children’s Hospital. The Tyson siblings have genetic conditions and both are waiting for their wishes to be fulfilled.

Wish Kid Khari’s wish to go to Hawaii will be featured, with special details about her experience and what life is like with her genetic condition.

Wish Kid Shelton passed away in February, but his mother will be sharing what his wish to meet the first responders of 9/11 meant to him and how it impacted hundreds of others even after his death.

Wish Kid Thomas’s condition kept him away from friends and school because of decreased immunity. His wish to have a gaming room enabled him to connect with his friends and have something to enjoy while at home. He is now in remission and can enjoy his gaming room with his friends, according to Make-A-Wish.

The telethon will feature area mayors, the Make-A-Wish Alabama board of directors and Heather Brown, an Alabama lifestyle and culture blogger and social media influencer.

With each wish costing an average of $8,000 to fill, that’s $1.6 million to fill just the 200 wishes on the current wish list.

The more donations this telethon nets, the faster these kids can have their wishes.

“Tuning into our first-ever telethon in Birmingham is the best way to give back to our mission this holiday season,” Bennett Smith said.
