Free applications soar at CU Boulder - The Daily Camera

Colorado’s Free Application Day brought a flood of applications to colleges and universities across the state and resulted in a 55% increase in applications at the University of Colorado Boulder and doubled statewide.

The spike in participation on Oct. 15 could be attributed to increased awareness among high school counselors and promotion by Gov. Jared Polis’ office, said Colorado Department of Higher Education Executive Director Angie Paccione.

“This is really important to the department because No. 1, we have a huge equity gap,” she said. “Our rate of students of color enrolling and completing college is one of the lowest in the country, so we have a laser focus on raising that.”

At $50 or more for each application, cost often stops students from applying to more than a few colleges or universities, Paccione said.

“This gives them the opportunity to see what really is possible, and there’s no cost to them to take that risk,” she said.

With 7,346 free applications submitted, CU Boulder had the second highest number of applications on Oct. 15 among all Colorado universities. Colorado State University received the most with 9,126.

It was a record number of applications in a single day for the university, according to Clark Brigger, executive director of admissions.

The day was a “huge win” for students, Brigger said in a statement.

“We are very happy with the diversity and quality of the applications we received,” he said.

State officials are still working to track applications to see which students end up enrolling through the program and whether they graduate, said department spokeswoman Lindsay Sandoval.

There’s still plenty of time for students to apply to college, Sandoval said, and many institutions offer free applications for students from low-income homes.

The department is planning to keep Free Application Day going for years to come, Paccione said, and it’s never too early for students to get their applications and essays ready.

“The application is free, but you still need to do the work to get accepted,” she said.
