Denver weather: Winter storm expected to make roads almost impossible in Denver metro area, mountains and plains - The Denver Post

Enjoy the sunny skies and high of 59 degrees on Sunday, Denver, because a “significant” winter storm could be headed this way Monday into Tuesday.

Sunday’s weather calls for mostly sunny skies with a low near 28 degrees, with winds up to 8 mph in Denver, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder. On Monday, a high of 48 degrees could bring along a rain and snow mix before 3 p.m., with a new snow accumulation of less than half an inch.

Monday night is a different story, when a winter storm watch is in effect through Tuesday afternoon.

The weather service’s hazardous weather outlook warns of heavy snow from the northern Colorado mountains across northeastern Colorado with accumulations of at least six inches from Monument and Limon northward, and a big area along and north of I-70 could receive a foot of
snow. Travel is expected to be difficult and almost impossible in many areas Tuesday. It should improve from west to east Tuesday afternoon as the storm moves eastward, the weather service said.

The storm’s impact on Denver is uncertain, with Denver possibly being on the edge of the storm, according to National Weather Service forecasters. But traffic still could be difficult in the Denver area by Tuesday morning, with closed or impassible roads in cities to the north of Denver and on the plains along and north of Interstate 76.

The heaviest snow is expected to start in the mountains late Monday afternoon, heading southeast into Denver at night, and then through the rest of northeast Colorado by midnight, according to the winter watch advisory. Although blizzard-like conditions aren’t expected, heavy winds up to 30 mph are likely Tuesday on the plains, which could make plowing roads difficult.

Heavy snow is expected with wind gusts as high as 16 mph and a new snow accumulation of 4-8 inches in Denver, according to the weather service. The forecast predicts the possibility of snow at 100 percent.

“While there is still some uncertainty about snowfall amounts and whether Denver will be in the area of heaviest snow, residents should start to consider the possibility of not being able to travel late Monday night and Tuesday,” the outlook stated. “This includes local travel in the Denver metro area and the other Front Range cities.”

The snow is expected to continue falling on Tuesday morning in Denver, mainly before 11 a.m., with wind gusts up to 17 mph, and a high near 30 degrees. The low on Tuesday is expected to be around 9 degrees, according to the weather service.

A return to sunny skies but a chilly day is likely on Wednesday in Denver, with a high near 30 degrees and a low around 15 degrees. The rest of the week is forecast to remain chilly, with more snow possible again on Friday, the weather forecast stated.

In the mountains, a chance of light snow is predicted Wednesday through Friday, with high wind gusts over the higher mountains, according to the hazardous weather outlook. Snow is expected on the plains Friday night into Saturday.
