TALLAHASSEE — Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick have made the Florida presidential primary ballot, along with 16 other Democrats.

Florida Democrats on Monday gave state election officials a list of 18 candidates for the March 17 primary that includes the two late entrants into the race.

Democrats had turned in a list in early November that didn't include Bloomberg or Patrick, but the party was allowed to update the primary ballot ahead of the state-mandated Nov. 30 deadline.

Florida law allows political parties to decide which candidates can appear on the primary ballot. State Democrats essentially put anyone on the ballot deemed a major candidate with national attention and national reach.

Bloomberg officially announced his candidacy Sunday and already has launched a massive television buy that includes markets in Florida. Patrick jumped into the race earlier this month and has already added a staff member with Florida connections.

Florida will play a pivotal role in the 2020 presidential election, as evidenced by President Donald Trump’s decision to kick off his reelection campaign in the state. Trump, who recently changed his residency and voter registration to Florida, is scheduled to hold a “homecoming rally” in South Florida on Tuesday.

But the timing of Florida’s primary — after Super Tuesday — has lessened the state's importance in determining the Democratic nominee. While some candidates have made a few forays into the state, including fundraising stops, Democratic candidates skipped the Florida party convention in October.

Some of the frontrunners, such as former Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, are slowly ramping up their efforts in the Sunshine State in the event that the contest is still undecided in March.

Biden has won endorsements from multiple state legislators, while Warren over the weekend notched an endorsement from New Florida Majority, a progressive group that backed Andrew Gillum ahead of the Democratic gubernatorial primary.
