WASHINGTON—The U.S. announced a new process for application for H-1B immigrant visas, requiring applicants to register online for an initial lottery before filing their full petitions for the coveted visas for highly skilled foreign workers.
Employers must register between March 1-20 to determine who will be selected to file full petitions, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said Friday.
The change is aimed at streamlining the application process, USCIS said.
Previously, employers sponsoring applicants would prepare their full petition to submit on April 1.
Businesses and immigration lawyers expressed concern that changing the system so close to the deadline could complicate the process and even crash the registration website.
