Breakthroughs in 3D GIS application - Geospatial World

SuperMap demonstrates its great strengths in 3D GIS technology innovation and 3D GIS application development.

3D GIS is an important branch of GIS and it has a huge demand in the market. In traditional GIS, 2D and 3D are independent of each other and focus on visualization. This creates limitations in 3D spatial analysis and computing, making it hard to meet the application requirements of users. Last month, during the 2019 GIS Software Technology Conference at Beijing, SuperMap released a series of products under the SuperMap GIS 10i and established a New 3D GIS technology system. In the past few years, due to cross-border cooperation and many other factors, the SuperMap 3D technology has achieved a number of breakthroughs and witnessed international-level advancements.

Breakthrough in new 3D GIS technology system

The new generation 3D GIS technology system by SuperMap is based on the integration of 2D and 3D technologies which expands the full spatial data model and strengthens analysis and computing capabilities. Also, it comprehensively integrates multi-source heterogeneous data such as oblique photogrammetry, BIM, point cloud, and 3D field, develops symbolized 3D modeling technology, and defines and implements some key technologies such as spatial computing, spatial relation query, and spatial analysis of 3D solid objects. In addition, SuperMap has also developed a full range of 3D GIS platform software products of Cloud and various terminals, which have achieved the 2D and 3D integration, ground and underground integration, indoor and outdoor integration, macro and micro integration. It is believed that these results will open a new chapter for 3D GIS applications.

At present, the information technology revolution characterized by digitization, networking and intelligence is booming, and the integration of the new generation information technology and traditional GIS technology has become a trend. As the construction of smart cities goes into a new stage, the digital expression of the whole domain, all elements, entire space and the whole process becomes a basic prerequisite for smart cities. In this context, the Digital Twin has emerged as an essential element, and 3D GIS technology is a must for building a Digital Twin of cities.

Exploration of whole-space 3D data model system application

The spatial data model is the understanding of real geospatial entities, phenomena and their interrelationships and an abstraction and expression of the real world in computers. SuperMap forms a complete data model system from 2D to 3D network data model, from point, line, region to 3D solid, from Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) to Triangulated Irregular Mesh (TIM), from Grid to Voxel Grid, which has whole-space expression, analysis and calculation abilities of 2D and 3D integration, land and sky integration, indoor and outdoor integration and macro and micro integration.

Simultaneously, the company constantly explores the application of 3D data model systems. Among them, the 3D solid data model can be used to express ground architectures, BIM and others. TIM can be used to express 3D fields such as geological attribute fields, while voxel grids can be used to express air pollution, wind fields, signal fields, etc. The voxel grid can also do some analytical expressions, such as the analysis of the sunshine duration in urban planning, whose analysis results can be expressed by cube grids. In these grids, red color represents longer sunshine duration and blue color represents shorter duration. According to the value of each grid and the dynamic filter display, the internal effects can be checked. In many cases, more refined expressions are needed. For instance, air pollution, which can be displayed by attribute values to express heavy pollution areas. What’s more, voxel grids can be sectioned dynamically to view the internal section effects.

Deep integration of BIM+GIS: Bringing more value through cooperation with Dassault Systèmes and other partners

To realize the cross-border integration of BIM + GIS, the first thing is accessing BIM data on a GIS platform. Among the global BIM software, each of them has their own storage methods. And the data formats are different from each other and they are relatively closed without an open file structure, which brings challenges to access BIM data to the GIS platform. Also, it requires data format conversion tools and plug-ins based on BIM and GIS to read BIM data, which is to convert BIM data to GIS database, based on the native support of the BIM software library.

SuperMap has accumulated a lot of experience in accessing BIM data, and has provided a variety of BIM mainstream design software conversion tools and plug-ins, such as Autodesk’s Revit, AutoCAD and Civil3D software, Bentley’s MicroStation CONNECT Edition and Dassault’s CATIA software to help export the vertex and attribute information of the data at one time and classify them from types and layers. In 2019, SuperMap conducted cooperation with partners in fields of housing construction, city planning, water conservancy and municipal administration, and jointly explored the innovative application of BIM + GIS, realizing a good and extensive cross-border integration of BIM + GIS, and gradually forming the ecosystem of BIM + GIS.

Among them, the global strategic cooperation with Dassault Systèmes has attracted the most industry attention. By joining hands of 3DEXPERIENCE platform’s 3DEXPERIENCity solution and SuperMap GIS platform software, SuperMap and Dassault Systèmes will actively participate into the construction, city and regional development projects in the global market. These developments reflect the efforts of SuperMap in creating BIM + GIS ecosystem and their expectations of creating more values for Digital Twins, smart buildings, smart parks and smart cities. We also hold a strong believe in the combination of Dassault Systèmes BIM technology and SuperMap GIS technology would jointly build a technical platform for the whole lifecycle of planning, construction and management, and realize macro-micro integration, indoor and outdoor integration, and ground and underground integration design and management.

From all above achievements, SuperMap demonstrates its great strengths in 3D GIS technology innovation and 3D GIS application development. With quick growth in the last two decades,SuperMap Software now is the biggest Chinese GIS supplier, and the third largest share in the GIS market (ARC Market Analysis 2019). We are looking forward to seeing more advantages and innovations of SuperMap 3D technology and more cross-border applications.
