Rangers make miraculous comeback to stun Canadiens - New York Post

MONTREAL — Why not try to capture all of the first quarter of the season into one 60-minute game?

That’s exactly what the Rangers did, as they played a wild back-and-forth affair, which included falling in a 4-0 hole, that ended with a shocking 6-5 win over the Canadiens on Saturday night.

The Rangers (10-9-2) were coming off a 4-1 loss in Ottawa on Friday night that coach David Quinn called “as disappointing as it’s been.” That was saying a lot after the first 20 games of the season has had drastic ups and downs, even within games.

Just like this one, as the Blueshirts started much like they ended Friday. The Canadiens (11-7-5) went out to a four-goal lead in the opening 22:51 of game time, but then the Rangers staged a drastic second-period comeback, cutting it to 4-3 going into the third.

The dramatics hardly stopped there. The Habs made it 5-3 at 5:20 of the third when Artturi Lehkonen scored his second of the night. But the Rangers countered just 32 seconds later, when a great blind, through-the-legs, backhand pass from Chris Kreider was popped in by Artemi Panarin to make it a one-goal game again, 5-4.

The Rangers’ penalty kill had been horrible over the past two weeks, but not only did they kill the first three Canadiens power plays in the first two periods, they got the tying goal shorthanded — a great saucer pass from Brett Howden finished by Brendan Lemieux at 8:40 to make it 5-5.

The inexplicable continued, with a long Jacob Trouba shot getting through a screen by Kreider and somehow getting past goalie Carey Price, trickling over the goal line to give the Blueshirts a shocking 6-5 lead.

The Blueshirts did kill off one more penalty, and they did just that — just as they stopped the chaotic final few minutes with Montreal having Price on the bench for the extra attacker.

The game had started like so many others for the Rangers — with sloppy play early resulting in a goal against. This time, Max Domi banged one home from in front at 2:03 of the first, taking a 1-0 lead. The Habs extended the lead to 2-0 at 10:00 when Lehkonen beat goalie Alexandar Georgiev glove-side to make it 2-0.

It certainly wasn’t Georgiev’s night early on, getting his first start since the 9-3 blowout Nov. 14 at Tampa Bay. Before the first period could end, Georgiev allowed another soft one, Domi beating him from the high slot with 33.8 seconds to take a 3-0 lead into the second period.

The Canadiens kept piling on, Georgiev letting a Shea Weber blast to sneak under his right arm at 2:51 of the period to make it 4-0. It seemed dire, and the Rangers seemed dead.

But then they sprang to life when Filip Chytil was able to finish a great cross-ice feed from Panarin at 6:11, cutting the deficit to 4-1.

Just 55 seconds later, Pavel Buchnevich — who had been called out by Quinn before the game for taking a bad too-many-men penalty Friday — lost the puck on a move in tight, but the loose puck bounced off a skate and under Price to make it 4-2. Just 2:25 after that, Lemieux redirected an Adam Fox shot passed Price, making it 4-3.

The Rangers had scored three times in a matter of 3:20 of game time. It was stunning, which set up their chance at redemption in the third.
